How to

How to sync your snippets across your devices

By default your snippets are stored locally on the device where you created them, and nothing leaves it. If you work across two machines and want the same library on both, there is an optional Google sign-in that syncs them between your own devices. It is opt-in — nothing syncs until you choose it.

Takes about 3 min

What you need

  • FlashType installed on each device you want covered
  • A Google account, if you decide to enable sync

Steps

  1. Decide whether you need it at all

If you work on one machine, local storage is doing the job and there is nothing to turn on.

  2. Sign in with Google on your first device

This is what enables sync. Without it, snippets stay local.

  3. Sign in with the same account on your other device

Your library becomes available there too.

  4. Confirm a snippet appears on both

Create one on either device and check it shows up on the other.

  5. Export a backup anyway

Sync keeps devices matched; an export is your independent copy.

Worth knowing

  • Sync is opt-in and off until you sign in. Local-only is the default, not a setting you have to find.
  • Sync covers your own devices signed in to the same account. It is not a shared team library.
  • Sync is not a backup. It propagates deletions too — an export file is what protects you from a mistake.

Questions

Do my snippets leave my device if I do not sign in?

Snippets are stored locally on your device by default. Signing in with Google is what enables syncing them across your own devices, and it is optional.

Is sync the same as a backup?

No. Sync mirrors your library between devices, which means a deletion on one propagates to the other. Export your snippets for a copy that a mistake cannot reach.
