Rotate a PDF — and make it stick
Turn pages 90°, 180°, or 270° and download a PDF where the rotation is saved into the file itself — not just how your viewer happens to display it. Rotate everything, or only the pages that came out sideways.
The short answer
To rotate a PDF permanently, open it in a rotation tool, choose 90°, 180°, or 270°, pick whether to rotate every page or only specific ones, and download the new file. This saves the rotation into the PDF itself, unlike the rotate button in most PDF viewers, which only changes the on-screen view and reverts when the file is reopened elsewhere.
How this works
Add your PDF
Drag the file onto the drop zone or click to browse. Nothing is uploaded — the file is read directly in your browser.
Pick the angle and pages
Choose 90° right, 180°, or 270° left, then rotate every page or type the specific pages that need fixing, like 2, 5-7.
Download the rotated PDF
The new file carries the rotation permanently, so it opens the right way up in any reader, on any device.
Why on-device matters here
Sideways pages usually come from a scanner, which means the documents you're rotating are typically the scanned kind: signed contracts, IDs, medical forms, tax paperwork. Most free online rotators upload all of that to a server you know nothing about just to change a number on each page.
This tool does the work in your browser with pdf-lib. Your file is read into memory, edited, and handed back — no request ever carries it off your machine. Open your browser's Network tab if you want to verify that yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my PDF go back to sideways when I reopen it?
Because the rotate button in most viewers only changes the current view, not the file. Adobe Reader, Preview, and Chrome's built-in viewer all do this. To make rotation permanent you have to write it into the PDF's page objects and save a new file — which is exactly what this tool does.
How do I rotate just one page of a PDF?
Choose "Specific pages" and type the page number. You can mix single pages and ranges — "3" rotates page 3 only, "2, 5-7" rotates pages 2, 5, 6 and 7 and leaves everything else alone.
What's the difference between 90° right and 270° left?
Nothing in the final result — 270° left lands in the same place as 90° right. Both options exist because people think about the turn in different directions; pick whichever matches how you'd describe the fix out loud.
Does rotating already-rotated pages stack up correctly?
Yes. If a page already carries a 90° rotation and you add another 90°, you get 180°, not a reset to 90°. The tool reads each page's existing rotation and adds to it rather than overwriting.
Does rotating reduce quality or re-compress images?
No. Rotation is a metadata change on the page object — the underlying text, vectors, and images are untouched. File size stays essentially identical and there's no generational loss, no matter how many times you rotate.
Does my PDF get uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser tab using pdf-lib. Open the Network tab while you click Rotate and you'll see no upload request. That matters for scanned contracts, IDs, and medical paperwork — the documents most likely to come out sideways in the first place.
Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?
Not here. Encrypted files are rejected with a clear message instead of silently producing broken output. Remove the password in Preview (macOS) or Adobe Reader first, then come back. We deliberately don't attempt to bypass encryption.
Why did my scanner produce sideways pages?
Sheet-fed scanners and phone scanning apps record the orientation the paper physically went through, not the orientation you read it in. Landscape originals, stapled documents fed sideways, and auto-rotate misfires on mostly-image pages are the usual culprits.
Is there a file size limit?
None imposed by us. The browser loads the PDF into memory to edit it, so very large scanned archives can strain a low-RAM device — but rotation is a light operation and handles big documents better than most PDF edits.
