1. Getting started
What is a text expander?
A tool that watches for a short trigger as you type and replaces it with a longer piece of text. You type /sig, you get your full email signature. The idea is old — the value is in not retyping the same paragraphs for the rest of your career.
How do I install FlashType?
Install from the Chrome Web Store listing, then pin it to the toolbar via the puzzle-piece icon so it is one click away.
Which browsers does it work in?
It is distributed through the Chrome Web Store and runs in Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc. We do not publish a Firefox or Safari build.
What should my first snippet be?
Whatever you retype most. For most people that is an email signature, a standard reply, or an address. Pick the thing that already annoys you rather than trying to design a whole library up front.
How do I choose a good shortcut?
Pick something that cannot appear inside an ordinary word. A bare 'sig' will fire in the middle of 'design'; '/sig' will not. A leading slash or a similar prefix character solves nearly every accidental-expansion problem.
Do I have to remember all my shortcuts?
No. Inline autocomplete shows matching snippets with a live preview as you type, so the list surfaces itself. Grouping related snippets under a shared prefix — /sup for support replies, /sal for sales — makes this work even better.
2. Snippets, fields and dates
What is a fill-in field?
A placeholder inside a snippet, written as [[customer name]], that FlashType prompts you to complete when you insert the snippet. It is what lets one snippet cover a family of near-identical messages instead of needing eight copies.
Can a snippet have more than one fill-in field?
Yes. You are prompted for each in turn. This is usually the difference between a library you maintain and a library that maintains itself — one snippet with three fields replaces eight variants and gives you one place to edit when the wording changes.
How should I label fill-in fields?
The way you would ask a colleague for the information. [[customer name]] is a far better prompt than [[field 1]] when you are moving quickly through a queue.
Can a snippet insert today's date automatically?
Yes. A date field is resolved at the moment you expand the snippet rather than stored in it, so a dated snippet never goes stale and never needs editing.
Which date format should I use?
If you write to recipients in both the US and Europe, a spelled-out month removes the ambiguity that numeric formats introduce. 03/04 means two different days depending on who is reading it.
Are there ready-made snippets?
Over a thousand templates ship with the extension, covering common email, support and sales situations. They are a starting point — a template sent verbatim reads like a template, so rewriting one into your own voice is worth the two minutes.
3. Formatting and where snippets expand
Does rich text formatting survive?
Bold, italics, links and lists carry into apps that support rich text. In a plain-text field the words survive and the styling does not.
What happens to a link in a plain-text field?
The link text remains but the clickable target does not. When a URL genuinely matters, write it out in the text rather than hiding it behind a word.
How do I write a snippet that works everywhere?
Write it so it reads correctly with no formatting at all, then add formatting as an enhancement. That way the plain-text destinations degrade gracefully instead of producing a wall of run-together text.
Where does FlashType expand snippets?
In standard text fields across the web — email, chat, CRMs, forms, and contenteditable editors like Notion.
Does it work in Google Docs?
The Google Docs canvas is not supported. Docs renders text in a custom canvas rather than a standard text field, which is why browser extensions generally struggle there.
Why did my snippet not expand on a particular site?
Some sites use custom editors that do not behave like standard text fields — the Google Docs canvas is the most common example. If a snippet works in Gmail but not on one specific site, that site's editor is the likely reason rather than the snippet.
4. Switching from another expander
Can I import from Text Blaze, Magical or TextExpander?
Yes. FlashType imports directly from Text Blaze, Magical and TextExpander exports, so switching does not mean rebuilding your library from an empty list.
Will my complex snippets import perfectly?
Plain text and simple placeholder snippets transfer cleanly. Advanced or conditional syntax differs between tools, so review your most complex snippets by hand after importing rather than assuming they came across intact.
What should I do before I uninstall my old tool?
Export your library first and keep that file. Produce the export while you still have access, and hold on to it until you have used the imported library for a week.
Does importing keep the two tools in sync?
No. Import is a one-time transfer into FlashType, not an ongoing link between the two tools.
5. Where your snippets live
Are my snippets stored locally?
By default, yes — your snippets are stored locally on your device. Optional Google sign-in syncs them across your own devices, and that sync is off unless you turn it on.
Is FlashType a fully offline, no-network tool?
Not quite, and it would be misleading to say so. Local storage is the default and nothing syncs unless you sign in — but the optional Google sign-in sync does involve your snippets moving between your devices. If you never sign in, they stay on the device where you made them.
Do I need an account?
No. You can install FlashType and use unlimited snippets without signing in. An account is only relevant if you want sync across your own devices.
Does sync share my snippets with a team?
No. Sync covers your own devices signed in to the same account. It is not a shared or team library.
Is sync a backup?
No, and treating it as one is a common way to lose a library. Sync mirrors your devices, which means a deletion on one propagates to the others. An export file is the copy a mistake cannot reach.
6. Export, backup and lock-in
Can I export my snippets?
Yes, your whole library, in one click, at any time. There is no paid tier gating the export.
What happens to my library if I stop using FlashType?
You export it and take it with you. The export exists specifically so that choosing FlashType is not a decision you are locked into.
When should I export?
After any significant addition, and before a browser reset, a machine change, or a big cleanup of your snippets. Those are the moments libraries actually disappear.
Should I still export if sync is on?
Yes. They protect against different things — sync protects against being on the wrong machine, export protects against a deletion.
7. Cost and limits
Is there a snippet limit?
No. There is no snippet cap, no trial and no paid tier.
Is there a catch?
The honest version: FlashType is a small extension from an independent project, and it is newer than the established tools in this category. It has no paid tier to fund a support desk, and it is Chromium-only. What you get is unlimited snippets with no account and no invoice; what you do not get is a decade of brand history.
How does it compare to Text Blaze, Magical or TextExpander?
Those tools are more established and have larger feature sets, particularly around scripting and team libraries. We keep dedicated comparison pages for each rather than summarising them here, and they are written to say where the other tool wins.
8. Troubleshooting
My snippet fires when I do not want it to.
The shortcut is probably a fragment of an ordinary word. Change it to something with a prefix character — /sig rather than sig — and the accidental expansions stop.
Nothing expands anywhere.
Check the extension is enabled and pinned, then reload any tabs that were already open before you installed it. Extensions do not apply to pages loaded before they were enabled.
My formatting disappeared.
The destination was almost certainly a plain-text field. Formatting carries into apps that support rich text and flattens elsewhere.
A fill-in prompt did not appear.
Check the placeholder syntax in the snippet — the field needs to be wrapped in double square brackets, like [[name]], for FlashType to recognise it as a prompt rather than literal text.
