How to put a live date into a snippet
Any snippet you reuse across days has a dating problem: hard-code the date and it is wrong tomorrow, leave it out and you type it manually every time. A live date field is resolved when you expand the snippet, so it is always correct without you thinking about it.
Takes about 3 min
What you need
- A snippet that mentions a date
Steps
Open a snippet that includes a date
Meeting follow-ups, status updates and dated letters are the usual candidates.
Delete the hard-coded date
Anything typed literally will be wrong the next time you use the snippet.
Insert a date field in its place
The date is computed at expansion time rather than stored in the snippet.
Expand it and check the format
Confirm the output matches the convention your recipients expect.
Reuse it tomorrow
The same snippet now produces tomorrow's date with no edit.
Worth knowing
- Date formats are read differently around the world. If you write to both US and European recipients, a spelled-out month removes the ambiguity entirely.
- Dates carry into any field that accepts the surrounding text — the date is resolved before the text is inserted.
Questions
Is the date fixed when I create the snippet or when I use it?
When you use it. That is the entire point — the snippet stores an instruction to compute the date, not the date itself, so it never goes stale.
